Position Summary

The Art Teacher develops students' artistic skills, creativity, aesthetic appreciation, and visual expression through engaging and standards-based instruction. This position provides a comprehensive visual arts program that encourages students to explore a variety of artistic media, techniques, and concepts while developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and creative communication skills.

The Art Teacher creates a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where students are encouraged to take creative risks, develop their artistic voice, and demonstrate growth through artistic production and reflection.

Instruction & Learning

  • Develop and implement engaging visual arts curriculum aligned with district standards and instructional goals
  • Create lesson plans and learning experiences that promote artistic skill development, creativity, and critical thinking
  • Teach a variety of visual art disciplines, including drawing, painting, design, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, art history, and other appropriate artistic experiences
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with special needs and varying skill levels
  • Demonstrate artistic techniques and processes through direct instruction, modeling, and guided practice
  • Utilize formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and inform instruction
  • Encourage students to analyze, interpret, and evaluate works of art from diverse cultures and historical periods
  • Integrate technology and contemporary artistic practices when appropriate to enhance student learning

Classroom Environment & Student Support

  • Establish and maintain a positive, safe, and productive classroom environment that supports student learning and creativity
  • Promote responsible use, care, and maintenance of art tools, materials, equipment, and studio spaces
  • Maintain high expectations for student behavior consistent with district policies and school expectations
  • Foster student confidence, collaboration, self-expression, and artistic growth
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and staff regarding student progress, expectations, and achievements
  • Encourage family and community engagement in student learning and artistic endeavors

Assessment, Exhibitions & Program Support

  • Evaluate student performance and growth in artistic skills, knowledge, and creative expression
  • Maintain accurate records of student achievement, attendance, and assessment data
  • Prepare progress reports and provide timely feedback to students and families
  • Plan, organize, and display student artwork through exhibitions, showcases, and community events
  • Support school-wide events and activities that promote student creativity and celebrate artistic achievement
  • Assist in the selection, organization, and inventory of instructional materials, supplies, and equipment

Professional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and support staff to promote student success
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional learning communities, committees, and school improvement initiatives
  • Maintain professional competence through ongoing professional development, workshops, conferences, and professional learning opportunities
  • Support district initiatives and contribute positively to the school culture
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent

Qualifications

Required

  • Valid Oregon Teaching License with appropriate Art endorsement or ability to obtain
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Art Education or a related field
  • Knowledge of visual arts curriculum, instructional practices, and student assessment
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues
  • Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills

Preferred

  • Master's Degree in Art Education or related field
  • Successful prior teaching experience at the secondary level
  • Experience working with diverse student populations
  • Experience organizing student art exhibitions, showcases, or community art events
  • Experience integrating technology and digital media into visual arts instruction

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to communicate effectively with students, staff, families, and the public; operate standard office and instructional equipment; move throughout classrooms and school facilities; demonstrate artistic techniques; and occasionally lift and carry art supplies, equipment, and materials.

Work is performed in a school and classroom environment and may involve exposure to art materials, tools, equipment, and cleaning supplies commonly used in visual arts programs.
