JOB TITLE:Assistant Band Director

DEPARTMENT:Fine Arts

REPORTS TO:Principal and Director of Fine Arts

FLSA STATUS:Exempt

CONTRACT STATUS:Full-time/10-month contract / Extra Duty

SALARY SCHEDULE:       Certified / Extra Duty

SUMMARY:  Responsible for teaching an overview of instrumental music elements, styles, techniques, music literacy to secondary band students 6th-12th grades. Assistant Band Director is responsible for providing curricular and extracurricular opportunities for use of the learned skills in keeping with the District philosophies, procedures, policies and programs. Teamwork and vertical alignment is a hallmark of the Owasso Public Schools band program. All employees of OPS are expected to act with integrity, support organizational goals, communicate in a clear and respectful manner, and champion the needs of our students and drive continuous improvement.    

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  These statements are intended to describe the responsibilities assigned to this position and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required.

1. Coordinates with the Director of Fine Arts, the Director of Band Operations, and site principals to meet District curriculum goals and objectives.  
2. Works with the Director of Band Operations to ensure vertical alignment of curriculum.  
3. Organizes the instruction of band classes based on the Oklahoma Academic Standards.
4. Helps organize the band music program for assigned buildings.
   1. Plans competitive activities such as OSSAA, OKPAS, OkMEA and other regional contests.
   2. Coordinates and schedules activities and concerts according to the school calendar.
   3. Encourages respect for and enjoyment of all public performances.
   4. Stresses good sportsmanship in competition.  
5. Assumes responsibility for administration of band music funds.
   1. Collaborates with the Director of Band Operations and Fine Arts office in budgeting and requisitioning supplies, as well as accounting for receipts and disbursement of funds.
   2. Maintains accurate inventory record of equipment and uniforms.  
6. Exemplifies citizenship, sportsmanship and professionalism in behavior and performance of duties.
   1. Promotes community understanding through communication with parents and concern for students.
   2. Remains current in the field of music education through professional organizations, professional literature, workshop, performances, adjudicating, and in-service programs.
   3. Complies with the position description of the classroom teacher.  
7. Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by the principals, the Director of Band Operations and the Director of Fine Arts.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

1. Bachelor's degree in education-related discipline, preferably in music education
2. Valid Oklahoma teaching certificate with a secondary instrumental music certification

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:Computer literate; excellent written and oral communication ability; strong knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and laws applicable to education and special education. Ability to follow all district policies and procedures. Ability to work independently, displaying initiative and enthusiasm for the tasks being done. Demonstrating strong communication skills, orally and in writing, with faculty, staff, team members, and administrators. Ability to work without supervision, and work as a team player. Ability to document records accurately. Ability to manage confidential information in a manner that respects students, families, and employees. Ability to listen effectively.  Knowledge of overall operation of a functioning percussion program and its relation to the parent band program. Ability to manage budgets, instrument inventories, and personnel.  Knowledge of state and OSSAA policies governing band and extracurricular activities. Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data.  Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills. Be a willing collaborator and teammate. Strong presence in statewide and national music professional organizations. Ability to successfully lead bands and ensembles at performances, contests and other arts events/experiences.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:Ability to read, analyze, and interpret English language including common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts and mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

REASONING ABILITY:Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions.  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

LICENSES and REGISTRATIONS:Current driver's license in good standing.
