Job Description

The Department of Geosciences at Boise State University invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow to calibrate rare-earth element (REE)-based thermodynamically-valid thermobarometers for rock-forming minerals relevant to igneous and metamorphic processes. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will work collaboratively with Professor Matthew J. Kohn and his research group. This work is funded for two years by a grant from the National Science Foundation (EAR 2547559). Major responsibilities are to focus on REE partitioning between garnet and clinopyroxene, potentially expanding consideration to other minerals. Additional responsibilities include semi-annual outreach to local educational institutions and help developing online teaching videos in thermodynamics and petrology.

We seek applicants with research interests in igneous or metamorphic petrology and geochemistry. We are open to a range of backgrounds, but candidates with expertise in thermodynamics and mineral analysis are particularly encouraged to apply. While not required, familiarity with experimental petrology is beneficial. Interest in outreach to the public is also beneficial.

The start date is flexible - ideally Jan 4, 2027, but an earlier or later start date is possible depending on an applicant's current position and commitments. The position will be contracted initially for one year, with a second year of funding available dependent on performance.

For non-US citizens, ability to obtain a work permit or visa is required.
